Fieldwork in Digital Archaeology, January 2010

Bert de Vries and Calvin College—in partnership with Open Hand Studios, the Department of Antiquities of Jordan, the American Center of Oriental Research, Brandenburg Technical University, and the people of Umm el-Jimal—are gearing up for a field season in January 2010. The field school’s innovative program will bring together students and researchers to complete the following objectives:

     1.      Record surface walls and architecture to form the basis for completing a virtual reconstruction and museum about Umm el-Jimal.
     2.      Complete the current site development strategy, including tour signage, conservation of key buildings, and planning an on-site museum.
     3.      Study and document modern culture of northern Jordan through a catalogue of modern artifacts and historical research on the Druze era to present.
     4.      Plan educational units on ancient Umm el-Jimal for local schools and community centers.
     5.      Conduct sampling for historical climate and vegetation research.

In addition, lectures and weekend travel will complement the research program to provide regional history and Umm el-Jimal’s wider context. The latter will include visits to major ancient sites such as Petra and Jerash, as well as geographic features such as the Dead Sea, nature preserves, and the southern desert. Students will also explore modern urban development and traditional village culture.

The field school will be conducted to coincide with Calvin College’s Interim 2010 term, departing for Amman on Saturday, January 2. While overseas, fieldwork at the site will be conducted Monday through Friday for three weeks, with travel on weekends. Students return either Tuesday, January 26 or on Friday, January 29 if including the optional trip to Jerusalem. Students receive three academic credits through enrollment in Calvin’s IDIS 340 (the Archaeology Minor capstone course) or HIST 380. Cost and financial arrangements are similar to other Interims abroad.

Although permission of the instructor is required to join Interim 2010, inquiries are always welcome.
